First Friday: Triton Animation Studios

First Friday is an annual open house event held by University Centers at University of California, San Diego on the 1st Friday of the academic year. This event is catered towards freshman and transfer students but free for all students to participate. It’s a fun opportunity for students to learn about campus resources that is offered by each department within University Centers.

In 2017, I led the design efforts for all graphics for the Pixar Animation Studios theme.

Logo

The logo drew inspiration from the following: Toy Story, its Etch A Sketch character, Luxo Jr (the iconic Pixar lamp), and the Pixar Ball where I replaced the star with the University Centers logo.

type Specimen

In this project, I used Clarendon to evoke a classic yet carnival-like aesthetic and Proxima Nova for a clean and easily-legible type.

Color Schemes & Branding

The color scheme for this project is based on primary colors to exude nostalgic childhood feelings. The brand colors of University Centers were incorporated to connect the theme with the brand.

Department Character REPRESENTATIVES

Each University Centers department chose a character from a Pixar movie to represent their group for the event. I illustrated each character with Adobe Illustrator and exported each character as PNGs files for each department to use and decorate their booth.

“VIP Tour Pass“ - Event Game Card

At the event, each student received a Tour Pass. Under my Senior Art Director’s direction, I designed the booklet to include instructions on “How to Win” prizes, a map of each “studio’s” (department) location, blank pages for sketching, a VIP badge for special discounts and offers, and advertisements for the night events. Most importantly, each Tour Pass included a perforated punch card that helped our team keep track of attendance and served as a raffle ticket for students to win potential prizes!

Informational Postcards

I also worked with my team to create informational postcards that showcased Pixar movie characters in their respective scenes and referenced to the University Center department’s services.

For instance, to maintain consistency with the signage of University Centers, the color of the bottom stripe on the card corresponds with each department’s location. The text on the card provided the background and respective contact information of the department. Each department’s logo served as the stamp on the postcard.

T-shirts

For a casual neutral style, I chose a muted blue-indigo colored crew neck t-shirt. The front of the shirt featured a red faux pocket with the University Centers Pixar Ball and the Luxo Jr. lamp peeking out. The fake stitching added a realistic touch to the design. The back of the shirt showcased the First Friday logo, modified to fit three inks. Lastly, the UC San Diego logo is advertised on the right sleeve.

Snapchat geofilter

I modified the logo to best fit phone screens and included a transparent gradient for both indoor and outdoor usage.

Collectible Button Pins

I designed these pins to be exclusively given to students who won the Triton Gaming Lounge competitions.

Yogurtworld custom flavor labels

We collaborated with the campus YogurtWorld to design exclusive frozen yogurt flavors for the day of the event.
